Puppy dog pals mascot

This is the first article in a series about my trip to California. In the following pages, I'll share my experience on San Francisco, Yosemite, Disneyland and San Diego.

This was a long weekend trip for me. Besides taking the train, I didn't have much time to organize things.

On Saturday night, I was in the subway station of Times Square. The clock said 12:42. I had spent the whole day on the train, and I didn't know what time it was back in my hometown. I was thinking of getting out of the station, but at the same time I had to know where the train would be arriving.

"You're not leaving," said a voice.

I turned around, and a woman was speaking to me. She introduced herself as Carol, and told me she knew where I was heading.

"I just wanted to meet the person who has been traveling on the same train for the whole day," she said. "It was such an incredible adventure for me."

She said she had already been on the same train four times. She was a big dog lover, and she loved traveling on the train with the people who took care of her.

"How are you going to be there?" I asked.

"I won't," she said. "I won't be in the station anymore. I'll go to a better place."

"I think that would be nice, too," I said.

"No, you don't," she replied. "I won't go anywhere until you take the train."

"Okay, I won't leave," I said. "Why?"

"To show how good I can be," she said.

"That's not true," I said. "How can you show it to me? I'm only on the train."

"That's okay. That's not my style," she said.

"Why are you showing me this?" I asked.

"So you can say I was your guide. When you are lost, you need someone to show you the way, and to take you where you want to go. I'll do that."

She had a big smile, and I liked her.

"Well, thanks for telling me all this," I said. "It makes me feel good."

"I know," she replied. "It's very nice of you."

The subway train arrived, and we boarded together. Carol sat beside me, and I felt like I was on an adventure.

"I'm glad you took the train. You will see a lot. You will experience a lot. You will meet a lot of different people. I know that in California you will go through a lot of new things. And I'll tell you about some of them."

"Great," I said.

"Did you know the reason they call San Francisco 'City by the Bay'?" she asked.

"No," I replied.

"Well, it was named after a lighthouse that was there in the first part of the century. The fog is really bad there. They built a big bridge for ships to come in and out. And one day a couple of ships, very big ships, came in and hit the bridge."

"Really? How did they do it?"

"It was really heavy traffic," she said. "There was lots of ship traffic in the bay. At first, the ships weren't big enough to hit the bridge. Then the ships got bigger, and they hit the bridge."

"Wow, I didn't know that."

"So the people from the area built a second bridge to support the first one. It has been like that ever since. If they don't build a second bridge, the first bridge will break."

"Wow, that's interesting. I never knew that."

"So this is what you will see in California. You will see a lot of different bridges. If they built a bridge, you will see it. And you will pass through a lot of places that are in a fog."

"That's cool," I said.

"I know, it's a lot of fun," she replied. "If you are tired or need to take a rest, you can take a nap."

"That would be nice," I said. "I've been working on my book."

"What's that?" she asked.

"It's about a woman who travels in a train. I want to travel for a while. When I'm done, I'll have a lot of knowledge."

"Good for you," she said. "And what's it about?"

"It's about travel, and it's about a woman who is a writer. She travels and writes. I thought that you might like to hear about what she does."

"I'd love to."

She told me about a woman in the 19th century who traveled on a ship. She said she would go to different places, and she would write about it.

"This sounds like fun," I said.

"So the woman writes about different things. She travels to Mexico, to China, to Ireland, to France. But there's a problem. If she writes about where she has been, then the places won't change. They will just be the same. And they won't change."

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"You don't know what a place is," she said. "If you tell someone that you are going to the North Pole, they don't know what the North Pole is, but they know what the North Pole is. But if you tell someone that you are going to San Francisco, you don't know what San Francisco is. You just know that it is a place in California. But if you tell someone that you are going to San Francisco, it won't be San Francisco anymore. You won't have to take a train, you won't have to take a plane,
