My dog keeps licking his private area for over a year now. His problem is he is trying to lick a large area of his skin. His whole belly is raw and infected with pus. He has been to the vet 5 times and they all say the same thing. "He just has to deal with it." I can tell it is getting worse and I don't know what to do.

What should I do? I have no medical knowledge and I can't afford any treatment right now. I don't even know how to treat this, or what medication I need to treat him with. Please help me, I'm desperate.

I don't think its right for your dog to be licking his bottom like that! It sounds like he has something nasty going on under the skin and is in constant pain. I suggest taking him to a vet who is experienced in dogs with skin problems.

You can clean his bottom with a clean cloth and some baby shampoo but he will need professional help!

If you can't afford to have him treated by a vet, get him to a vet and make sure you get a good referral. Also get his papers to show you can afford to pay for treatment and keep copies of them.

I have to say that I was with you right from the start. I could see the problem with him licking his bottom, I mean how long can he be licking it? Why don't you get the doctor to examine him? I would definitely take him to the vet because it is more than just licking.

The vet will help you with the cost and the right treatment to get rid of this problem. I can tell you, a lot of us on this forum are not vets so we are just looking for help.

I am so sorry you are in this situation. I have a male dog of 7 yrs, who just started licking his bottom. The vet said it's not serious but he was bleeding a lot and had some infections in there. I was so shocked. I called to the vet again and he was so sure he would be fine. They said it would go away and that I shouldn't worry. I tried to explain that I didn't feel fine. He said it would just disappear. The vet kept telling me I should leave it alone. My mom, who is the vet also was so adamant that I leave it alone. So I didn't bother him again.

It did get better for awhile and then the licking started up again. This time it was to his front legs and groin. I didn't want to make a big deal out of it and kept the dog to himself until it got worse. I really wanted to do something about it but I thought I didn't have the knowledge and wasn't able to figure out what he was doing wrong. I really want to know the cause of this. What I am wondering is if it has to do with the fact that we moved him from the east coast to the west coast. I really don't want to bring him back to the vet and see him getting his tail pulled out and having a look. So that is why I don't think it is right. I am going to try to be positive and treat it like I would a cold, and let it run its course. It is very discouraging.

Hi. My dog also licked his bottom for a long time, but he never was a lick, he just lick a part of his bottom, until a year ago and he got worse and worse, he was eating dirt, his bottom was raw and all covered with pus. So when i call the vet, he was just tellin me he has to deal with it, i am so sad that i am losing my best friend, i know my dog is suffering a lot. The vet just says he has a bad attitude. I did everything that i can to make him happy, i tried to make him better, he was eating food, but all it did was that he was getting worse. I'm so tired of seeing my dog suffering, i really want to get rid of this problem. I'm really afraid to bring him back to the vet, because i know the vet will tell me the same thing again, i really hope you can help me.
